Norton girls basketball squad faces challenges with young group

A team that lost to the Associated Press state champions less than a calendar year ago would seem to have high expectations the following campaign. Norton finds themselves in the opposite corner.Coach Brian Miller has one returning senior from 2011. The majority of his girls are comprised of young kids that were not a part of that historical group. He admitted that this season will be a work in progress.“ I want to see improvement as year goes on,” Miller said. “We have a young team, and I want to see what strides that they make throughout the season.”

Miller has been working on the basics and doing the ‘little things right.’ The Lady Panthers have a lot of young kids learning the system.

“We have four kids that played last year,” he said. “ They did not receive a ton of minutes, but this season they are getting thrown into the fire, if you will.”

Two players too look out for are Alex Klein and Casey Kasmelic.

Coach Miller said they have some promising guards, but there s ‘not one thing the team does really well at.’ Norton will likely expect some bumps early on due to a strong schedule. To simplify their objectives, Norton is looking to make progress game by game and quarter by quarter.

The defensive philosophy that made the Lady Panthers so lethal last season will be employed again in 2012. The team’s ‘pressure defense’ has been a staple of Coach Miller’s philosophies.

“We like to get after it,” Miller said. “Pressure it, shoot threes, play in-your-face defense, physical and we play fast.”
